There are few better indicators of a community’s cultural life than the quality of its restaurants, and in this respect, Tsawwassen graduates with honours. From fine Italian dining to tasty afternoon sandwiches, and from a family feast of Chinese food to a drink at the local tavern, Tsawwassen’s many restaurants can deliver solutions to any appetite.
Alfa Greco-Roman Cuisine
For those who like their meals to come with some Mediterranean flair, Alfa Greco-Roman Cuisine is an ideal dining destination. Having been run by the same Greek family for several generations, this establishment offers Hellenic cuisine that’s so genuine, you’ll think you’re in Athens. The pitas and gyros at Alfa Greco-Roman Cuisine (or “Alfa” for short) are highly customizable with meats like pork and chicken, and vegetables like tomato, cucumbers, celery, and peppers. Naturally, olive oil is readily available for almost all dishes at Alfa, as is feta cheese. And perhaps best of all, they deliver!
Illuminate Restorante
Those who demand class with their family outings will be well-served by Illuminate Restorante, a refined establishment that blends classical Italian and contemporary Canadian cuisine. Their pasta tastes as though it comes straight from Tuscany, with the Linguine Vongole and Spelt Spaghetti both being particularly popular in that regard. For a more Canadian-style dinner, their Grilled West Coast Salmon or Roasted Duck should satisfy any diner. While the food is magnificent, it’s the aura of propriety that really elevates Illuminate Restorante to the next level.
Best Garden Restaurant
No community is complete without a respectable Chinese food establishment, and the Best Garden restaurant serves that role admirably in Tsawwassen. All of the usual staples of North American-style Chinese food are available there, including rice with vegetables (corn, carrot bits, and peas), egg rolls, spring rolls, wonton soup, chow mein, and my personal favourite, beef with broccoli. Best Garden also serves a number of conventional Western-style dishes, including their popular hamburger-and-french-fry combo.
Kon Thai Restaurant
Kon Thai Restaurant has set a new standard for local Asian cuisine by bringing authentic Thai food to the streets of sunny Tsawwassen. While not as well-known as Chinese food, Thai food is every bit as delicious. Kon Thai Restaurant focuses on take-out items in particular, meaning that if you have company coming over to your home, you can pick up some meals at Kon Thai and subsequently serve it to your guests; they are bound to be impressed! Just make sure to try the Pad Gra Paow.
Browns Social House
Located adjacent to the Coast Tsawwassen Inn, Browns Social House injects a bit of class into the tried-and-true concept of the community pub. This is the kind of place where everybody knows your name, and where the food and drinks are every bit as good as the company. Browns is particularly known for its attractive waitresses, and its bartenders seem to know as much about alcohol as doctors do about the human body. At Browns Social House, the social experience is just as important as the meal itself.
Bistro Peekaboo
For Japanese food and sushi in particular, Bistro Peekaboo is the place to dine in Tsawwassen. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is casual and friendly, and the prices are quite affordable, making it ideal as a family dinner destination on a Sunday night. The sushi is well-prepared, and the rice it’s served with is – without fail – excellent. Those who hold authenticity in high regard will be pleased to know that the classically-trained sushi chefs at Bistro Peekaboo are, in fact, Japanese.
Ossie’s Deli & Meats
Every town has a restaurant that escapes notice by most visitors, but which is universally beloved by residents. In Tsawwassen, that restaurant is Ossie’s Deli & Meats, a family-owned sandwich shop located at 1557 56th Street. You may think you’ve had a sandwich before, but the fine meats, fresh vegetables, and artisan bread used at Ossie’s will open your eyes to the true possibilities available in this staple meal.
The Hilltop Cafe
In only a few years of operation, the Hilltop Cafe on English Bluff Road has earned a reputation as a chic, fun place to grab a bite throughout the course of a busy day. While specializing in coffee and tea, the Hilltop Cafe also sells snacks and meals, including muffins, cookies, and sandwiches. Its staff are both friendly and professional, which may explain why so many customers who come here once find themselves coming back for more.
